All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1) Review

Who would have thought that we would relate so profoundly with a murderbot!

All Systems Red is a refreshing scifi novella that surprised me in so many ways. First, I have to admit that I’m a huge lore nerd. I love reading pages upon pages about how every single thing works and functions in a given setting, stories of how the state of the world came to be, past stories about the characters, and so on. All Systems Red contains 0% of these while managing effortlessly to present a captivating story. Secondly, I would never have thought that I would feel be so profoundly connected with a socially dysfunctional (murder)bot.

And this is exactly what All Systems Red is about. It is not so much a scifi story, rather a story about social anxiety, our desperate attempts to belong (or not to belong), and the importance of choosing our own path in life.

I will not write more about the story so that I won’t spoil anything (the book is only 156 pages), however I have to admit that the final confrontation is a bit anticlimactic. Specifically, I would like to have read a few more pages about how things were resolved instead of getting a time skip.

Nevertheless, All Systems Red is a excellent book that I highly recommend to everyone (not only scifi enthusiasts) and I’m looking forward to reading the follow-up adventures of Murderbot.

★★★★½ = Excellent
